Chinese permitted to donate sperm only once in lifetime

BEIJING - Chinese men are allowed to donate sperm once in their lifetime - and the selection process is gruelling.

Ministry of Health regulations state that only healthy men between the ages of 22 and 45 can give their sperm once in their lifetime, China Daily reported Friday.

It bars gay men and foreign nationals from donating sperm.

Some sperm banks prefer donors to be at least 170 cm tall and hold a college degree as most couple’s want their child to have these traits.

Becoming a donor isn’t easy.

A willing donor has to visit a sperm bank three times for initial tests and then undergo blood screening if their sample meets the standard, the media report said.

They then have to return 10 to 15 times to donate their sperm.

That’s not all.

Six months after they have donated, the men receive a final test for HIV.
