No link found between milk, infant puberty in China

BEIJING - There is no evidence that milk powder produced by a Chinese company caused three infant girls to grow breasts, China’s health ministry said Sunday.
In July, parents and doctors in Hubei province complained that milk powder produced by Nasdaq-listed Synutra International caused at least three infant girls to develop prematurely and grow breasts.
The ministry formed a panel of endocrine, paediatric and food safety experts under the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and launched a probe Aug 12.
Health ministry spokesman Deng Haihua Sunday said the probe found the hormone content of the milk powder to be within normal standards, Xinhua reported.
The experts tested the residue of milk powder consumed by the three infants, as well 42 other samples of Synutra products in the market and 31 samples of dairy products from other producers, he said.
