Family planning in Bhopal gets a Nano boost
By IANSSunday, December 5, 2010
BHOPAL - Health workers in Bhopal can now look forward to various prizes for enrolling men in the government’s vasectomy programme, including a shiny new Tata Nano car.
“We are finalising awards for motivators and besides scooty and electronic gadgets, one can also win a Nano,” city collector Nikunj Srivastava told to IANS Saturday.
The winner will be selected amongst the supervisors, anganwadi workers and sahayaks who work as motivators in the government’s family planning programme.
Other prizes include TVs, washing machines, DVD players and cash rewards.
Bhopal has a target of 24,000 vasectomy for 2010-11, and so far, only 8,000 men have undergone the procedure.
In a meeting with health department officials, Srivastava urged them to encourage people to go for vasectomy as it is a reliable and safe method.
“Make them realise that having more than two children will not only create problems of nurturing and education, but also create problems later in distribution of land and property,” he said.
“Convince those who have daughters that girls are not inferior to boys in any way,” he added.
