Use of Cancer Causing Methyl Iodide as a Pesticide Raises Controversies

SAN DIEGO (GaeaTimes.com) — A cancer causing pesticide will soon be heading to the fruit farms and flower fields in San Diego County.

According to the State Pesticide regulators the toxic chemical methyl iodide that is effective in controlling pesticides in fruit farms and flower fields can be used from now on. However methyl iodide is one of the toxic chemicals found very effective in causing cancer. It will be used mainly for fruits like strawberries.

The use of methyl iodide has come into existence after the prevention of the use of methyl bromide as a pesticide as it causes ozone layer depletion. Critics have raised many questions about the usage of methyl iodide that can be a risk to farm workers, neighbors and drinking water. But the regulatory panel have ensured that there will be many restrictions imposed on the growers on the usage of this controversial pesticide.
