Vulvodynia : Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Vulvodynia is a chronic pain in the female genital organs. It causes pain and discomfort in the vulva region of the female reproductive system. In recent times this disease has been gaining attention which was for a long time ignored.
Cause
There are many causes which are being recently explored for Vulvudynia. The possible causes may include use of irritants (shampoo, soap, etc.), infection, hormonal changes or some damage to the vaginal tissue.
Types
Vulvodynia can be of two types :
Generalized The pain or discomfort can be felt in the entire vulvar area.
Localized Pain is felt only in the vestibule (the opening to the vagina).
Symptoms
Some women, who are affected by Vulvodynia suffer from acute pain in the vulvar region. It can affect the sex life of a woman. It can also bring depression In a woman’s mind. Some of the common symptoms seen around the vulvar region are as follows :
Burning
Stinging
Rawness
Itching
Aching
Soreness
Throbbing

Vulvodynia involves many kinds of treatment. The treatment involves diagnosis of the vagina and subsequent tests to see the intensity of the pain. With time, your doctor will help you to give you the best treatment.
Vulvodynia affected women can carry a simple hygienic process as follows :
Wear 100% cotton underwear (no underwear at night)
Avoid tight-fitting undergarments and pantyhose
Avoid douching
Use mild soaps for bathing and clean the vulva with water only
Do not use vaginal wipes or deodorants or bubble bath
Do not use pads or tampons with deodorants
Use lubrication for intercourse
Apply cool gel packs to the vulva area to reduce pain and itching
Avoid exercises that put pressure directly on the vulva, like bicycling
The pain caused by Vulvodynia can last for a few months. Woman can take anti-depressants only recommended by doctors
