SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Following complains about its loose caps which could lead to a contamination of the medicine and choking in small children, the Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc. decided on a MiraLAX recall on Thursday. Representatives of the pharmaceutical company, however, made it clear that MiraLAX is not harmful if consumed occasionally and neither were there any complains about any person falling ill as a result of the over the counter drug.

The MiraLAX recall this week means that the drug which can be obtained from a chemist even without the prescription of any practicing doctor, will not be available in the US markets for close to a month. The Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc. recalled the 17.9 oz and 19.9 oz bottles of the laxative following complains about its defective caps. The company has also issued a notice to all its consumers to dispose off any bottle, the cap of which may look defective to the eye.

MiraLAX is a type of laxative available in a powder form. The drug, when consumed helps in retaining water in the human digestive system, thus helping in an improved bowel movement. However this drug cannot be used on a regular basis. It is to be taken only for occasional constipation, else the effect of the drug may be minimized to a large extent. Apart from MiraLAX, allergy drugs Clarinex and Claritin are also the products of the Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc., who initially functioned outside the United States, merging with Merck in the year 2009. Representatives from the pharmaceutical company have said in a statement following the MiraLAX recall that customer service executives of the company will be readily available to answer any questions regarding the recall.
