SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- Pancreatic cancer is a killer diseases that claims thousands of lives every year in USA as well as other countries. It is being claimed by some researcher nowadays that nanotechnology can be used in healing and treating this disease. The microscopic particles have a special gold nanoshell that makes light into heat and that kills the cancer cells. LANP Director Naomi Halas who is heading the research said that pancreatic cancer is notoriously difficult to treat while expressing hope that the nanoparticle-based ‘theranostics’ can change that”.

The researchers are trying to study the several aspects of nanotechnology that can be used to treat pancreatic cancer. The researchers are also hopeful that in the near future nano-technology can be used for treating other types of cancer as well. As a matter of fact, this form of cancer claims at least 35000 lives every year in the USA alone per year. This has been admitted by the American Cancer Society. The survival rate for five years is nearly 4 percent and post surgical survival rate is also less than 25 percent. Therefore, the new invention can usher new hope for the victims of the ailment.

However, the research is not yet complete and detailed medical trials need to be conducted before the researchers can come out with a full cure for the pancreatic cancer. Alliance for nanotechnology in Cancer program of the National Cancer Institute is the source for the $1.8 million grant which is being used for doing the research. The invention has made sensation among cancer researchers and they hope the outcome will prove to be fruitful.
