LUCKNOW - Alarmed by the deaths caused by an “unknown killer virus” in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Mayawati Sunday warned all civic officials to work properly or face action.

Over 55 people have died due to the virus over the last week.

In an official release issued after her return from an election tour of Bihar Sunday evening, Mayawati said that besides these deaths, more than 3,000 people across the state have been hit by life threatening diseases like dengue, encephalitis and gastro-enteritis in the recent days.

She said the insanitary conditions in most towns was responsible for the situation.

“All senior municipal officials must take a round of their respective areas every morning and take instant action against the lower staff wherever proper cleaning was not being carried out,” she said, asking district magistrates to form special inspection teams and to personally conduct surprise checks.

Mayawati has told officials to hold a fortnightly review meeting to monitor civic amenities in different cities.
