CAIRO - Over 1,800 people in Egypt have been affected with a viral conjunctivitis known as pink eye, a media report said.

The number of people infected with pink eye has risen to 1,831, health ministry spokesman Abdel-Rahman Shahin said Sunday.

As many as 1,703 cases were detected in Daqahliya, 92 in Port Said and 36 in Damietta.

Most of the affected people are students, Xinhua reported citing the official MENA news agency.

Pink eye, an inflammation of the conjunctiva, makes the eyes extremely red and spreads quickly, but usually causes no long-term vision damage.
