Monza (Italy), Oct 14 (IANS/AKI) A 52-year-old woman in Italy has become the world’s first to undergo transplants of both her hands, hospital sources said.

Her hands and feet were amputated in 2007 due to a severe blood poisoning. It took six hours to complete the operation Monday night, the San Gerardo di Monza hospital said.

“The patient is in ‘good condition’ but the prognosis will be reserved for another seven days until we know if she will gain use of the hands,” it said in a statement.

The hand donor was reportedly a 58-year-old woman.
