Haryana to set up new-born corners, care centres

CHANDIGARH - Haryana will set up New Born Corners (NBC) and Sick New Born Care Units (SNCUs) in all the government hospitals of the state to check the infant mortality rate, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said here Tuesday.
He said units for the NBC would be set up at 144 sub-centres, 11 rural community health (RCH) centres and 156 primary health centres under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
Earmarked exclusively for the care of the new born, these will be located in the labour room, and shall be equipped with provisions for countering pre-maturity, hypothermia, birth asphyxia and infection.
SNCUs would be set up in all the district level government hospitals by March 2011. Each unit, having the capacity to admit and treat six to 10 sick new borns, will provide them with specialised intensive care at district hospitals and all referrals from health centres.
Hooda said a special campaign would be launched in the state to treat the anaemic children.
The infant mortality rate in the state is 43 per 1,000. An official said the state government wants to bring it down to less than 30 per 1,000.
