Trinidad: 3 deaths from severe form of dengue

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Health officials in Trinidad says three people have died from a severe form of mosquito-borne dengue fever.

The health ministry says its epidemiologists have confirmed three deaths from the hemorrhagic form of dengue and are investigating two others.

Chief medical officer Anton Cumberbatch tells reporters that roughly 600 people have been sickened so far in 2010 of the milder, typical form of the flulike illness spread by the bite of a common urban mosquito.

Recent wet, hot weather has created ideal conditions for the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that spread dengue fever.

Health authorities are voicing concern about the spread of dengue as the rainy season advances.

The deaths were announced on Sunday.
