LUDHIANA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The whole of India is rewarding the contribution of doctors on the 1st of July which is celebrated as “Doctor’s Day” every year. However this year the Indian Medical Association in Ludhiana has decided to remain away from the celebrations. It is their way to protest against the Clinical Establishment Bill which came into effect in the recent past. As part of the “Black Day”, doctors in Ludhiana will march in protest against the Bill starting the walk from the Gumar Mandi landmark in the city.

Representatives of the IMA are of the opinion that the Indian government’s decision was partial, not taking into consideration the problems that the medical fraternity in Ludhiana faces. The higher authorities in the IMA say that the money required to fulfill the provisions enumerated in the Clinical Establishment Bill is so much that it will subsequently lead to a rise in the cost of treatment, which in many cases may not be affordable for a large section of the society. Hence it has been decided by the authorities of the IMA that “Doctor’s Day” this year will be marked as a “Black Day” in the history of the Ludhiana medical fraternity.

In a meeting which took place last Tuesday, Dr Narotam Dewan, the President of the IMA, appealed for the withdrawal of the Clinical Establishment Bill. He said that since the new bill was in favor of only the corporate hospitals in the country, it would put the larger part of the medical fraternity at a disadvantage. Dr. Bidhan Chandra Ray, in honor of whom “Doctor’s Day” is celebrated, would probably agree with IMA, Ludhiana.
