Global Hospitals to invest Rs.200 crore

MUMBAI - Global Hospitals will come up with a 400-bed tertiary care centre in Mumbai with an investment of Rs.200 crore, a top official said Friday.

The facility, to be set up in Parel in south-central Mumbai, is expected to be operational from December this year.

The hospital will focus on multi-organ transplantation and stem cell therapy, including gastroenterology, liver, kidney, minimal access surgery, cardiology, trauma, orthopaedics, neurosciences, oncology, digestive and urological diseases.

“We are the first centre in India to launch a liver dialysis facility. Having established a strong and credible presence in south India, we now want to expand our reach across India,” said K. Ravindranath, chairman-cum-managing director of Global Hospitals.

“The setting up of the Mumbai facility is in full swing. We will shortly start our facilities in Delhi, Kolkata and Bhubaneshwar as well,” he added.

Eminent liver transplant specialist Mohamed Rela will be the head of liver transplant unit. He has conducted over 1,300 liver transplants in Britain and India.

“Liver transplantation is a complex procedure. Right from finding a donor to recovering enough to ensure that the organ has been accepted by the body, this is one of the most difficult surgeries to undertake,” he said.

“Given the high incidence of Hepatitis-B and Hepatitis-C in India, a large number of people in the country are in need of transplant operations. Our aim is to treat such cases successfully,” he added.

Talking about the law that governs organ transplant, Rela said it was time to make it possible for all equipped hospitals to retrieve organs.

“The law needs to be revised. One need not be at a transplant centre to donate organs. All hospitals with Intensive Care Units and specialists should be authorised to do so,” he said.
