71-year-old dies while participating in brisk walk competition

CHANDIGARH - A 71-year-old man died in a hospital here after collapsing while participating in a brisk walk competition organised by Chandigarh police here Thursday, police said.

Bishen Singh took part in the four-km walk under the veteran category. However, he fainted, just 100 m before completing it.

“We immediately took him to the government hospital in Sector 16 where he later died. Doctors are saying that it could be because of a sudden heart attack but things will become clear only after we get the post-mortem examination report,” said a police official.

Police have informed Singh’s family.

Chandigarh police and the senior citizen association here had organised the Senior Citizens Brisk Walk Competition Thursday at Sukhna Lake, one of the prominent tourist spots of the city.

All senior police officials, including Chandigarh Director General of Police S.K.Jain, were present when the incident occurred.
