One more dies of swine flu in Hyderabad, toll mounts to eight

HYDERABAD - One more person died of influenza A (H1N1) Sunday, taking the death toll to eight since the outbreak of swine flu in Hyderabad.

A woman, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in L.B. Nagar here, died Sunday morning. The condition of four more patients at the same hospital is also critical, said doctors.

As many as three swine flu deaths were reported Saturday. These are the highest number of deaths in a single day.

Since Saturday, health authorities have swung into action to put preventive measures in place.

More swine flu cases are being confirmed from different parts of the state capital. According to health officials, total confirmed cases now stand at 256. Hyderabad had reported India’s first swine flu case on May 16.

However, the first swine flu death was reported on Sep 2. Two people died on the same day while two more died on Sep 5.

Meanwhile, swine flu has claimed the life of a software engineer hailing from Hyderabad in the US. According to delayed reports reaching the health department, A. Charan died of swine flu on Sep 1 in California. His body was brought here on Sep 10 and was cremated the same day.

Swine flu has so far claimed 172 lives in India.
