Your profession influences which drugs you use to get a high

MELBOURNE - An Oz expert has suggested that a person’s job can influence their drug use.

Ken Pidd, of Adelaide’s Flinders University, said that people in construction were more than twice as likely to use cannabis as people in education and defence, reports News.com.au.

According to new analysis of the 2007 national Drug Strategy Household Survey Data, men were also more likely to smoke pot than women.

Media and telecommunication workers were also high on the list of cannabis users.

But when it came to other drugs, there was no difference in use among the sexes.

Hospitality industry workers were almost three times as likely to use “other drugs” compared with other professions.

Transport workers were about two-and-a-half times more likely to use “other drugs” and finance workers were also among the top users.

Pidd said construction workers were more likely to be doing monotonous work, whereas those in transport wanted to stay awake and be able to work longer hours.

Finance workers may also be choosing amphetamines rather than cannabis because they still needed to be able to act quickly and “think on their feet”.

Pidd presented his findings at the 30th Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs in Canberra. (ANI)
