MCD appeals to Delhiites to help prevent dengue outbreak

NEW DELHI - Residents of Delhi must take serious preventive efforts and help the authorities combat the dengue outbreak in the city, which crossed the 1,500-mark Wednesday, civic body health official said Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, V.K. Monga, medical relief and health committee chairman, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said: “As there is no particular vaccine for this vector-borne disease, one should be careful and avoid conditions of mosquito breeding.”
He said even a small amount of water stagnant in flower pots can be a good source of Aedes mosquito breeding. The overhead tank should be closed and the level of water in the tank should be kept a little low.
“Instead of waiting for the authorities, people should themselves prevent spreading of dengue, as health becomes the prime concern for any human being,” Monga added.
He also informed that to help the city residents in this venture, the civic body’s health employees will voluntarily work over time to create public awareness and involve students community to control dengue.
According to the MCD, the members of the Health Employees Welfare Union (HEWU) have set up a central coordination committee with two members representing each area of the city and they will conduct various awareness programmes on dengue.
“We will involve National Service Scheme (NSS) workers of various schools and colleges and we will be conducting rallies, awareness campaigns with resident welfare associations, the MCD and Delhi government,” Yogender Kumar Rai, member of the HEWU said.
The union has come out with leaflets to create awareness among people about dengue.
