NEW DELHI - Delhi reported 74 new cases of dengue, pushing the total number of those infected with the water-borne disease this year to 1,155, two more than the last year.

With an average of 60 dengue cases reported daily over the last few days, the figure has crossed 1,150-mark in the Commonwealth Games host city in the first week of September.

As October and November are the months when the viral disease is generally at its peak, alarm bells are tolling for Delhi administration.

With the number rising rapidly, the dengue cases this year may see a repeat of 2006 when the capital reported 3,366 cases and 36 deaths.

Of the total cases this year, about 993 cases are reported from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi areas while around 122 are from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) areas. Twenty-one cases are from outside the city.

South zone of the capital has been reporting the maximum spurt in cases — 190. The dengue cases in other zones are: Central Zone (168) and Civil Lines (132).

The disease has claimed three lives so far in the capital.

According to the MCD, the number of cases till this time in 2009 was only four, while it was 22 and 92 during the same period in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
