Doctor: experts agreed on Lockerbie bomber health

LONDON — A cancer specialist who advised Scotland’s government on the release of the Lockerbie bomber says experts were certain his prognosis was poor.

Oncologist Grahame Howard said in a statement Thursday that he was one of four advisers on the health of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, who is suffering from cancer.

Al-Megrahi was jailed for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 above Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 259 people onboard and 11 on the ground. Most of those killed were Americans.

He was freed on August 20 of last year when doctors said he likely had only three months to live.

In his statement, released by the prison service, Howard said the prognosis was based on specialist advice at the time.
