Summary Box: FDA reviews Cymbalta for chronic pain
NOT JUST FOR DEPRESSION: The Food and Drug Administration is raising questions about the antidepressant Cymbalta, as Eli Lilly & Co. requests approval to market the drug for chronic pain.
BLOCKBUSTER BOTTOMLINE: Cymbalta is already a multibillion dollar drug used by nearly 15 million patients. The FDA is concerned about expanding use of the drug because it has been associated with liver damage.
PANEL OPINION: On Thursday a panel of outside advisers will vote on whether Cymbalta is safe and effective for chronic pain. The FDA is not required to follow their advice, though it often does.
