AMRITSAR - A middle-aged woman died of swine flu in Punjab, authorities said Monday.

This was the first case of swine flu in Amritsar in 2010.

“The deceased was identified as Malti Devi, 48. She was suffering from running nose, sore throat and headache and had come to us last week for treatment. Earlier she was going to some private hospital,” said Hardeep Singh Ghai, district nodal officer for swine flu, here Monday evening.

“She was kept in an isolated ward in the civil hospital here. We sent her nasal swab samples for tests and her reports confirmed she was suffering from swine flu. We are scrutinizing the health of all those who were in direct contact with her,” he added.

During the last winters, at least 50 people of Punjab and Chandigarh died due to swine flu.
