CHANDIGARH - A day after a woman gave birth to a stillborn baby in a government hospital’s laboratory following delay in medical assistance, the Chandigarh administration Thursday directed state-run hospitals to immediately treat critical cases without wasting any time.

The directions have been issued to the government medical college and hospital in Sector 32 and government multi-specialty hospital in Sector 16 here.

“The first priority of any doctor is to save the life of a patient. Therefore if anyone needs instant medical help, then doctors should immediately treat him, without wasting any time in paper work. We have issued directions to Sector 16 and 32 hospitals and told them to change their rules,” Chandigarh Health Secretary Ram Niwas said.

About Wednesday’s incident of a mother giving birth to stillborn child at Sector 16 hospital, he said the matter was being looked into and strict action will be taken against the culprits.

“We will also make sure that nobody unnecessarily harasses the attendants of the patients in the hospitals,” he said

A special team has been constituted to look into this matter.

“We have recorded the statements of the victim and her family members. A probe is on and we will get the inquiry report by Saturday,” said a senior official of the hospital.
