Calif. doctor who hailed cancer cure arrested
LOS ANGELES — A California doctor has been arrested for allegedly defrauding patients across the country out of more than $1 million by promising some of them she could cure their cancer through an herbal supplement.
Dr. Christine Daniel was indicted on fraud charges Thursday and faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted.
Federal prosecutors say Daniel used her position both as a doctor and a Pentecostal minister to entice people from across the nation to take her herbal product.
Authorities say she once touted her cancer cure and its success rate — at least 60 percent — on the cable Christian TV network, Trinity Broadcasting Network.
Authorities say that some of her patients, relying on her product, died later of complications of cancer.
