S. Dakota man dies after donating part of liver

DENVER — A South Dakota man who donated part of his liver to his brother has died, temporarily halting live donor liver transplants at the University of Colorado Hospital where the transplant was done.

Thirty-four-year-old Ryan Arnold of Watertown died Aug. 2.

He underwent the surgery four days earlier to help his brother Chad Arnold, who lives in suburban Denver.

This would be Colorado’s first death of a live liver donor and the fourth in the country if it’s ruled it was a result of the procedure. Ryan Arnold went into cardiac arrest two days after the surgery and then fell into a coma.

Chad Arnold was readmitted to a Denver-area hospital to continue his recovery from liver disease.

(This version CORRECTS APNewsNow. corrects that brother who received transplant was readmitted to the hospital. Will be updated.)
