NEW DELHI - The central government has created a separate council and new posts for research in the ancient Siddha medicine branch.

Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS) has been created as a separate body and 37 additional posts and 21 officials will be provided to focus on promoting the traditional medicine system. In all, about 500 officials will be there in the new body.

The objective is to provide sufficient manpower to the CCRS speedily in order to make it properly functional, a health ministry official said.

Earlier, there was one single council for research in both Siddha and Ayurveda. However, this separate council will now be focusing completely on the Siddha medicine system.

Two institutes, Ayurveda Research Institute of Mother and Child Health Care, Thiruvananthapuram and Capt. Sriniwasa Murthy Research Institute for Ayurveda and Siddha Drug Development, Chennai will be assisting the research, the official said.

Oldest among Indian medicine systems, Siddha is among the ancient medicine systems promoted by Ayush Department of the health ministry.
