Accused abortion doctor has notorious reputation

BALTIMORE — Authorities in two states are trying to stop an abortion doctor with a notorious reputation from practicing medicine.

Dr. Steven Brigham is accused of using a novel scheme to take advantage of disparities in state abortion laws. Since he wasn’t allowed to perform late-term abortions at his New Jersey office, documents show he led patients in a caravan to Elkton, Md., where the abortions were completed.

Brigham has had his license suspended or revoked in several states, dating back to 1992. He was found to have botched two abortions in New York. Now, authorities in Maryland have ordered him to stop practicing medicine, and New Jersey authorities are trying to take his license away.

Brigham’s attorney says his client’s actions were legal and cautions against jumping to conclusions.
