Top arms control official diagnosed with cancer
OAKLAND, Calif. — The State Department’s top arms control official has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.
Ellen Tauscher informed her staff of the diagnosis last week.
According to her staff memo posted Tuesday by ForeignPolicy.com, Tauscher said she has an early stage of the cancer and expects a full recovery. She said treatments, including surgery, would take place during the next several months.
Tauscher represented California’s 10th congressional district for 14 years before being tapped by President Barack Obama for undersecretary of state. The 10th district stretches from the eastern San Francisco Bay area through the California delta.
