A study has revealed that people who are using tanning machine for 10 years or more are more vulnerable to melanoma than others. The reports came in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention a few days back.

The results came after diagnosing 2,268 patients. The chance of developing Melanoma is 74% less among the people who never used tanning bed than those who go tanned frequently, says co-author Martin Weinstock of Brown University School of Medicine.

Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer that kills nearly 7,000 Americans a year. The disease has a direct link with tanning machine emitting both types of ultraviolet light UVA and UVB. Specially, doctors warn about the risk of tanning salons hugely used this days by the teenagers.

About 35% of 17-year-old girls use tanning machines for proms, graduations and beach trips, according to Food and Drug Administration.

However, the Indoor Tanning Association’s John Overstreet has discarded the link between melanoma and tanning beds.

When reputable researchers are coming to vastly different conclusions, it’s clear that a lot more research is needed.
