NEW DELHI - At least one among every 1,000 new born children in the country has a cleft lip and palate, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told parliament Tuesday.

“As per rough estimates, the approximate incidence of cleft lip and palate is 1.4 per 1,000 live births in India,” Azad told the Rajya Sabha.

The facilities for management of such deformities require surgical intervention which are available both in public and private hospitals in the country, he said, adding that the treatment to such patients in central government hospitals is free.

More than 1,500 plastic surgeons are available for carrying out such interventions in the country, he added.
