Medical parole rejected for jailed China dissident
BEIJING — The wife of one of China’s best-known dissidents says a request for medical parole for her imprisoned husband has been rejected.
Zeng Jinyan appealed last week to Beijing prison authorities and said Hu Jia has a serious disease that she fears might turn into liver cancer.
But she says a prison hospital director called Hu’s mother on Monday and said the request for parole had been rejected, and Hu has been moved from the hospital back to prison.
Zeng says she still wants a written response and is still asking for the medical parole.
Hu has had liver problems in the past, including cirrhosis. He is serving a 3 1/2-year jail term for sedition that is set to end in June 2011.
