8-year-old boy seriously wounded in Somalia dies
NAIROBI, Kenya — A doctor says the Somali boy whose bullet-shattered face drew offers of aid from around the world has died following surgery.
Dr. Peter Nthumba says Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud died late Wednesday of intestinal bleeding that may have been caused by an ulcer or stress. Nthumba operated on the 8-year-old earlier this week.
Aid group Healing the Children of Minnesota flew Mohamoud to Kenya in October for surgery.
His face was almost entirely blown off in September when a bullet hit him in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
His plight personified the brutal conflict in Somalia. Its capital sees near-daily bloodshed as a powerful insurgent group with links to al-Qaida tries to overthrow the fragile government.
