Pelicans treated for hypothermia from Calif. storm

LOS ANGELES — Wildlife officials say 25 California brown pelicans are being treated for hypothermia from the ongoing storms.

The pelicans have been found over the past few days and taken to the International Bird Rescue Research Center in San Pedro.

Center spokesman Paul Kelway says the incessant rain has prevented the birds from getting dry and that has weakened their immune systems.

At least two birds were found dead and two more died after arriving at the center. Kelway says most are doing well.

He says the birds are also trying to cope with oily, greasy ocean water fouled by massive storm runoff.
