LUCKNOW - A 27-year-old man, who fell on two iron rods at a building under construction, has got a new lease of life after doctors here performed a rare surgery and removed the rods which had pierced his body.

Ramesh Kumar, a labourer from Chhattisgarh, fell from the building Monday night in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar locality. The two iron rods passed through his right lung, breaking three ribs, while the other touched his skull, passing through the neck.

He was rushed to a private hospital that referred the case to the Chhatrapti Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) doctors.

The doctors operated upon him for nearly four hours Tuesday and removed the rods from his body.

“The surgery involved great risk as the rods could not be pulled out casually… They (rods) could have damaged other organs too,” Arshad Ahmad, one of the doctors who operated upon Kumar, told IANS.

We had to take out the iron rods keeping in view the damage to the internal organs. Loss of blood was another issue that concerned us,” he said.

After conducting an X-ray, followed by a CT scan of the patient, the doctors decided to perform the surgery as Kumar had a chance as his heart was beating normally.

Now the patient is out of danger and recuperating,” said Suresh Kumar, another doctor in the team.

After regaining consciousness, he could not believe he was alive,” the doctor added.
