LONDON - A jailed murderer in the UK has won an argument in the court to have cosmetic surgery.
Denis Harland Roberts, who was sent behind bars for killing an elderly couple, claimed victory in High Court and the country’s publicly funded healthcare system National Health Service (NHS) is to foot the bill.
The 59-year-old convict said a birthmark on his face made him “self-conscious” and also led him to be the target of bullies at school. The port wine stain was also apparently linked to his violent temper, reports the Daily Express.
Meanwhile, the challenge, which may let other inmates to be considered for similar treatments, has evoked critics’ fury.
Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “This man committed a heinous crime, so it beggars belief that taxpayers are now expected to pay for him to improve his looks.
“When law-abiding people are being refused treatments that could save their lives, it is appalling that a murderer is given free cosmetic surgery.”
Ex-Tory Minister Ann Widdecombe added: “This has been a ridiculous waste of taxpayers’ money. If this man has the same rights as an NHS patient, he should go right to the back of the queue.”
Roberts was sentenced after stabbing a 70 something couple to death after breaking into their home. (ANI)
