MALIHABAD - With an aim to lure diabetics, farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Malihabad District grew a mango variety brought from Florida, which has 75 percent less sugar content than regular mangoes.

Horticulturalists in Malihabad who imported branches of the Tommy Atkins variety from Florida five years ago were happy to see the results in Indian soil.

“As compared to regular mangoes, the sugar content in these is 75 percent less,” said B. B. Ram, Director, state horticulture department.

The researchers said they are studying the prospects of developing the variety in India that could earn them lot of foreign exchange.

“This is an exotic variety brought from Florida. We are at present researching. We can grow it here, it will earn us good foreign exchange,” Ram said.
