WASHINGTON - With increasing number of children and teens becoming overweight or obese, the risk of developing health problems such as diabetes is also growing.

To counter the growing problem, Cindy Cunningham, a nutritionist at UT Southwestern Medical Centre, says it is essential to help babies avoid weight issues from the start of their lives.

“Even people with a genetic tendency to be overweight can avoid excessive weight gain with good nutrition and exercise,” said Cunningham.

“Start with breastfeeding and introduce solid foods when the baby is developmentally ready - around four to six months of age.

“Learn to recognize your child’s hunger signs and don’t use food as a pacifier,” she added.

She has also offered some tips to help kids stay healthy:

Keep portions small and allow children to get a second helping if they’re still hungry.

Keep the healthy food and snack options, such as fruit, stocked in the kitchen.

Don’t give up on offering healthy foods, as it might take several tries before a child will accept.

Use low-calorie substitutes when cooking meals, such as low-fat cheese and nonfat milk.

Encourage children to get exercise through physical activity. (ANI)

Proper nutrition and some type of daily exercise, for their children, will help the parents to stave off obesity in their children; a problem which has been linked to dibetes. No one wants a member of their family to become obese, or worse yet to develope diabetes. Being healthy is a lifestyle, not a diet. There are many good tips on how to achieve permanent weight loss; none of them includes gimmicks, diets, or diet pills. To assist with weight control; keep a daily food journal and every time the urge to snack is felt, first drink a large glass of clear water. The major reason so many people in America are overweight is because we eat too much for comfort! It does not hurt to treat ourselves with something special once in a while, what is necessary is that we limit our portions and do not overeat! It is also necessary to keep our body properly hydrated, so drink a full glass of water with each meal or snack. Being overweight ******, but after reading a book, I lost 85 pounds! Words can not express how good I feel! This is a comment which I recently received about the book Lose Weight Using Four Easy Steps
