December 1st, is celebrated as the World AIDS Day. It was first observed in 1988 to spread awareness of AIDS pandemic, caused by spreading of HIV virus.

On World AIDS Day, we honor the millions of people around the world who have been impacted by the AIDS epidemic - those who are living with HIV, those we have lost, and the caregivers, families, friends and communities who have provided support.

Theme

“Universal Access and Human Rights”

The World AIDS Campaign arrived at the selection of the 2009 theme, after having close consultation with representatives of various constituencies, communications and media representatives of partner organizations, and friends of the World AIDS Campaign.

Why such theme?

Human rights are often misinterpreted as abstract ideals, having no practical value. The theme has been chosen to address the critical need to protect human rights and make HIV prevention, treatment, care and support accessible to all. The theme acts as a call to countries to remove laws that discriminate against people living with HIV.

The slogans for the World AIDS Day materials were designed to underscore the importance of awareness of human rights.

Among the key slogans adopted:

• I am getting treatment.

• I am living my rights.

• Everyone deserves to live their rights

Access for all to HIV prevention treatment care and support is a critical part of human rights.

World AIDS Day is not just about raising money, but also about increasing awareness and education. World AIDS day provides us with the opportunity to recognize the significant strides we have made in the fight against HIV/AIDS over the last 25 years, and recommit ourselves to joint efforts to overcome the obstacles and challenges that still stand in our way.
