San Antonio rape kits to undergo DNA testing

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police say nearly 150 victim rape kits will face DNA testing as the department pushes to solve years-old cases.

Police announced the new planned testing of rape evidence in cases where the assailant was not known or the victim declined to pursue charges.

Chief William McManus says results will be sent to a national DNA database used by law enforcement agencies. McManus says police want to raise the potential that the person is going to get caught by pulling them into a DNA database.

San Antonio has nearly 5,200 untested rape kits in storage, with some cases going back to 1987.
