India’s Medanta ties up with Nepal hospital

KATHMANDU - Personal surgeon to the presidents of India since 1991 and founder of a sprawling multi-super speciality medical institution in New Delhi, Naresh Trehan will be signing an agreement with one of Nepals leading corporate houses for a new technical cooperation in medicine.

Trehans Medanta - the Medicity, that combines a research centre and medical and nursing school in Gurgaon, is signing a memorandum of understanding with Nepals Norvic International Hospital in Kathmandu Saturday to develop a medicity in Kathmandu valley.

Norvic, best known for its heart care, began to develop from 1996, three years after it was established, when it formed a technical alliance with New Delhis Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre.

Now, with the tie-up with Medanta, it is seeking to upgrade its current 100-bed hospital in Kathmandu into a 300-bed one and start a medical college as well as 300-bed teaching hospital in neighbouring Lalitpur from 2011.

R.M. Mainali, chief of corporate communications at Norvic, told IANS the MoU will be signed by Trehan and Basanta Chaudhury, chairman of Norvic.

The Chaudhurys are a leading corporate group in Nepal and a scion of the family, Vinod Chaudury, made it to Forbes list of the richest men in the world.

The technical cooperation will pave the way for Medantas doctors teaching in Norvics medical college, providing support to the hospital and training Norvic doctors.

They will also assist in medical camps to be started by Norvic from next month. The first camp will be held Dec 18.
