SANTIAGO DE CUBA - A Cuban medication for diabetic feet ulcers is fast becoming popular in a number of countries and has been used to treat more than 22,000 patients worldwide, according to a senior official.

Luis Herrera Martinez, director of Cuba’s Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Centre, said the Heberprot-P is the leading product made by the institution, and has helped avoid amputation and improve quality of life in many people, according to Prensa Latina, Cuba’s official news agency.

Martinez said the product was being monitored and showed safe results, with hardly any relapses among patients.

A clinical study was recently conducted in Europe for a new health patent. The drug has also showed good results in Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Algeria and Libya, among other nations.

Commercial deals with Russia, China, Brazil and South Africa are in the process, he said.
