DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- If you think the branded honey you often buy from the market with the label of a reputed brand is healthy and safe for consumption think again! A recent study carried out by a environmentalist group has found out that most of the popular brands of honey sold in India have high levels of antibiotic which may not be good for the health of the consumers. The news comes as a shock as the leading Indian honeymaker including Baidyanath, Dabur, Himalaya, Khadi Gramodyog have been found to contain higher than permissible level of antibiotics. The study was carried out by the Centre for Science and Environment. Only Hitkari honey has passed the test and this brand’s honey is safe for consumption the report said.

The honey brands from abroad have also goofed up in the survey and reputed brands from Switzerland and Australia are among them. It is quite amazing as the major brands selling honey have failed the test while Hitkari Honey which is not a global brand has emerged the cleanest one. The samples were taken from Delhi as it has been reported. While the beekeeping industry does use antibiotics for prevention of diseases they are found in honeys made by the companies.

Excessive use and absorption of antibiotics can result in ailments like cancer among the users ands may also cause damage to certain organs. In USA and other European nations usage of antibiotics is not allowed in honey. Sadly, in India there is no standard for antibiotics for usage in honey. The sale of Hitkari Honey is likely to go up after this discovery.
