Feds: Barbados woman can stay with sick child

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Authorities say a Barbados woman who had been told she could not stay in the U.S. while her daughter was treated for a rare form of cancer will not be forced to immediately return home.

An oncologist in her home country had recommended Petrah Gooding bring her daughter, Niamh Stoute, to the cancer center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Alpharetta. The 7-year-old girl suffers from neuroblastoma.

Gooding told WSB-TV that immigration officials inexplicably granted her a three-month visa extension. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had extended her daughter’s visa so she could continue treatment, but Gooding’s extension had initially been denied.

The girl’s treatment will last until at least June, so Gooding will need to apply for another extension in November.
