Twin Cities nurses to vote on deal to avert strike

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Nurses Association will vote next week on a tentative deal that could avert a strike by about 12,000 nurses at 14 Twin Cities hospitals.

The union said Friday that if 51 percent of its members vote “yes” in the Tuesday vote, the contract will be officially ratified. The ratification requires a two-thirds majority.

If deal doesn’t get enough votes, negotiations will resume. A strike is authorized if 66 percent or more nurses reject the deal.

An open-ended strike had initially been scheduled to start July 6.

Under the tentative agreement, the nurses gave up their demand for rigid nurse-to-patient ratios and the hospitals withdrew their proposal to cut pension and health care benefits.
