RAIPUR - With the World Health Organisation predicting that cancer will be the no. 1 killer by 2010, mining and metals giant Vedanta Group has begun to set up a 360-bed state-of-the-art cancer hospital here.

“This 360-bed hospital is being built on 50 acres of land with an estimated cost of over Rs.350 crore,” a statement from the company said. The foundation for the hospital was laid in August 2007.

It added that once fully operational, the hospital will employ about 125 doctors and 300 nurses besides many para-medical and non medical staff.

The cancer hospital project would be completed in two phases.

The first phase is slated for completion in November 2011. In this phase, the hospital would become operative with 100 beds.

The hospital will have five satellite centres, located at strategic locations covering 16 districts of Chhattisgarh.

In the first phase, the hospital is expected to look after 4,000-6,000 patients and once it becomes fully operational it is expected to cater to about 15,000 patients.
