NEW DELHI - An Iraqi man weighing 272 kg was operated for weight loss at Delhi\’s Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, doctors said Thursday.

Abdulhameed Radhi Jasim, 41, underwent a laparoscopic weight loss bariatric surgery. According to doctors, he is the heaviest man to be operated for the procedure in an Indian hospital.

My weight started posing a lot of problems for me. I could not perform the minimal daily chores. I learnt about the Bariatric centre at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and decided to come here for the procedure, said Jasim, who is recovering after the first part of his surgery.

Jasim, a diabetic, had obesity problem since childhood.

Bariatric procedure removes a great part of the stomach and leads to \’considerable\’ loss of weight.

The Bariatric Surgery was very useful for him as his BMI had shot over 70. The normal BMI score is 25. Initially, he is slated to undergo a weight loss of about 50 kg and then would visit India again for the second part of the surgery which will lead to a further loss of 50-80 kg, said Arun Prasad, senior consultant, Minimal Invasive Surgery at Indraprastha Apollo
