NEW DELHI - Conjoined twins Sita and Geeta will leave for their hometown in Bihar after they are discharged Saturday, more than a month after being successfully separated following a 14-hour marathon surgery, a doctor said Friday.

“The babies are doing well. They have gained weight and are healthy. They will be discharged tomorrow (Saturday),” Sanjeev Bagai, senior doctor and chief executive of the Batra Hospital where the surgery was conducted, told IANS.

Asked about a slight curve in their backbone, the doctor said: “It is a process of self-correction and takes a few years. No intervention is required now.”

He said the twins will again come to the capital by the year-end for routine check-up.

A team of 27 doctors April 5 separated the 18-month-old Siamese twins, born with congenital abnormalities of being joined at the waist, hip and legs and having a common genito-urinary and intestinal system.

Siamese twins are extremely rare and few reach the surgery stage. The long-term success of separation surgeries in many international centres is less than 50 percent.
