KENTUCKY (GaeaTimes.com)- The health conscious people and vegetarians who prefer salads and dishes made with lettuce are in for a shock. Owing to an E Coli outbreak the Freshway Foods, based in Ohio has recalled romaine lettuce in several states of the USA. Altogether 23 states of the USA are being affected by this recall and they include Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina among others. The Romaine lettuce that is under recall was sold under brands like Imperial Sysco and Freshway. The affected lettuce were sold to a number of food service outlets, wholesale outlets, store salad bars etc. The packs that have a ‘Use by Date’ stamp of May 12 or earlier should be discarded. It is also applicable to the ready to eat variety salads made by companies like Ingles Markets, Giant Eagle and Kroger.

Freshway Foods was informed about the bacteria contamination possibility by the FDA. The Freshway plant in Sidney has been scanned by FDA but nothing has been found there so far. Possibly the source of contamination lies in the field in Arizona where they were grown. As per the news almost 19 people have reported sickness after consuming the contaminated lettuce. A dozen of the victims had to be hospitalized as well. According to the FDA the contamination can lead to life threatening illness in people who eat that lettuce and do not listen to the recall instructions.

Freshway has asked the customers to throw away the packages of the contaminated lettuce. The recall once again has proved why strengthening up the food safety standard is necessary.
