NEW DELHI - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for a meeting on Friday to discuss the issues of inadequate health care facilities in tribal areas, illegal medical practice and spurious drugs.
A NHRC official said, “The meeting will discuss the issue of illegal medical practice by quacks in India, circulation of spurious drugs, lack of health care facilities in tribal areas among various other issues relating to our health care system in order to come out with suggestions to improve it.”
“The rights body is ‘deeply’ concerned about the right to health in the context of many shortcomings in the present health care delivery system. In particular, it is concerned about the unavailability of essential drugs, doctors and nurses in the country,” he added.
The official further said that in the light of renewed national focus on the right of the people to quality health care, the Commission feels that there is an urgent need to redesign and reform the existing health care system.
“In this backdrop, the Commission is organising a meeting of Health Secretaries of all the states and Union Territories on ‘Illegal medical practice and health care facilities in Tribal Areas’ on January 29 here,” he added.
NHRC acting Chairperson Justice GP Mathur will inaugurate today’s meeting that will be attended by representatives from Medical Council of India and Delhi Medical Council. (ANI)
